    The 4x4 post anchor is intentionally made slightly oversized since a “4x4” post usually measures about 3.5" x 3.5" and can vary in size. The instructions even note to “shim as necessary to achieve plumb post”. For a snug fit, many people use thin treated wood shims, composite or PVC shims that won’t rot, or even a wrap of exterior-grade flashing tape to take up the slack. Once the post is shimmed and secured with the recommended screws, the anchor and post lock together firmly, and the shims simply help hold it straight during installation.
