How do I rent large equipment, tools, or trucks?
Stop by the Rental Center at your nearest Home Depot to see which trucks or tools you can rent. If you want to be sure of what's in stock, call first to inquire about a tool, truck, or large equipment. You could also read our truck rental or tool and equipment rental pages to see if what you need is in stock at your favorite store. For more on renting large equipment or tools, read the Tool Rental FAQs, which includes terms and conditions for the equipment.
Can I rent a tool or large equipment for an hour?
You can rent large equipment or tools for four hours or more. It depends on how long you'd like to rent them. Small DIY projects may only require a rental for a few hours, and major projects can also be accommodated. You've got options to rent tools by the week, day, or month, too. If you need it longer than your initial rental period, call your Rental Center to arrange an extension and avoid late fees.
When do I bring the tools back?
You can return the tools early if you complete your project sooner than predicted, but on-time works, too. As long as you return it by the deadline you were given when you rented it, you'll be good to go. Please clean off any mud or dirt from the tool as well. If you need them longer, give the rental center a call to see if you can extend your rental period.
Can I choose how long to rent a truck?
Rent a truck or cargo van for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes might be enough time. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on how long your project is. Remember to factor in the drive between the job site and the store, as you'll need to return it to the same store where you rented it. Penske moving truck rentals allow one-way rentals as well as round-trip options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the contract before selecting a truck.
Do I need to refill the rental truck with gas?
Yes, please fuel up the truck before you bring it back. Note the original fuel level when you receive the truck, and be sure to fill it with enough gas to match that level. If you don't, you'll be hit with a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.
Can I rent a truck or large equipment with only a driver's license?
No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be 21 or older. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a credit card hold or a deposit, too. We don't accept cash for Home Depot truck rentals, so please bring your credit card. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements. Select tools as well as large equipment also require ID verification via CLEAR.
How do I get my large equipment rental?
Depending on your location, you may be able to get large equipment dropped off at your job site for an affordable rate — out in the field or at your own home. We'll need at least 24 hours notice so we can adequately prepare your rented equipment and you'll need to rent it for a full day. In places where delivery isn't available, speak to an associate for the best way to get your large equipment.
How do I avoid extra fees and penalties on my large equipment rentals?
Think of your rented large equipment as any other vehicle: Make sure it's parked legally and you obey traffic laws. Read the manual so you're using it correctly to avoid damaging the equipment or injuring yourself. Also, plan ahead to ensure the equipment is ready when you are. If you cancel within 12 hours of your scheduled delivery, you'll pay a cancellation fee. Make sure to return equipment by the deadline or extend the rental period to accommodate the extra hours or days you require.
